A GUIDE TO TRADITIONAL HERBAL MEDICINES
A sourcebook of accepted traditional uses of medicinal
plants within Europe - 2003 Edition
The European Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal
Products provides new opportunities for herbs to
be restored to their former role as popular medicines.
"Traditional use" is defined under the terms of
the new Directive. It is taken to mean at least
30 years of use anywhere in Europe, or 15 years
in Europe if used for at least 30 years elsewhere.
It is assumed that the new Directive will be formally
enacted around 2009. The 30-year and 15-year periods
therefore will start at 1979 and 1994 respectively.

BRITISH HERBAL PHARMACOPOEIA 1996
Monographs of the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia
1996 (BHP) provide quality standards for 169 herbal
raw materials.
Those herbs official in the European Pharmacopoeia
or British Pharmacopoeia at the time of publication
are covered by abbreviated monographs in this volume.
Subsequent work by the European Pharmacopoeia Commission
(Council of Europe) has led to the introduction
of many more herbal monographs in the European Pharmacopoeia.
Nevertheless, the BHP remains a very useful aid
to quality assurance, particularly for herbs not
featured in official pharmacopoeias.

BRITISH HERBAL COMPENDIUM Volume 1
A handbook of scientific information on
widely used plant drugs
The
British Herbal Compendium offers a wealth of scientific
information on plant drugs for which quality standards
are defined in the revised British Herbal Pharmacopoeia
(BHP). This first volume covers about half of the
plant drugs in the BHP 1996 and the others are covered
in Volume 2. Plant drugs official in the European
Pharmacopoeia and/or British Pharmacopoeia, and
consequently requiring only abbreviated monographs
in the BHP, are given full treatment in the Compendium.
