The
European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products
(EMEA)
In January 1995, a new European system for the authorisation
of medicinal products came into effect. The European
Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA)
was established by the European Council and London was
chosen as its seat. The new European registration system
is an outstanding step towards the establishment of
a unified market for medicinal products. It intends
to promote the free circulation of pharmaceuticals within
the EU while reinforcing the protection of public health.
"The
Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) was
established in September 2004, replacing the CPMP Working
Party on Herbal Medicinal Products. The Committee was
established in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 726/2004
and Directive 2004/24/EC, which introduced a simplified
registration procedure for traditional herbal medicinal
products in EU Member States.
The HMPC's activities
aim at assisting the harmonisation of procedures and
provisions concerning herbal medicinal products laid
down in EU Member States, and further integrating herbal
medicinal products in the European regulatory framework.
As part of these objectives,
the HMPC provides EU Member States and European institutions
its scientific opinion on questions relating to herbal
medicinal products. Other core tasks include the establishment
of a draft 'Community list of herbal substances, preparations
and combinations thereof for use in traditional herbal
medicinal products', as well as the establishment of
Community herbal monographs. |

The Eden Project was constructed
in a 160-year-old exhausted china clay quarry at Bodelva,
near St. Austell, in Cornwall. Home to around
1 million plants of just under 4,000 taxa (species and
cultivars). Most are not rare, except for the few that
tell stories of the need for conservation, neither were
they taken from the wild. Many were grown from seed
in their nursery, others came from botanic gardens,
research stations and supporters, mostly in Europe and
the UK. |

Discovering

Herbal Medicine.
Although this is non-practitioner
